Sugarcane farmers in Western Kenya are planning to abandon the crop following the expiry of the extended Comesa moratorium on cheap sugar imports.
The farmers said they will start growing other cash crops since they have no hope in the sugar sector now that the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa will allow importation of cheap sugar.
