Africa's "king of sprint" was born in a Black township outside of Windhoek. A track scholarship enabled him to enroll in Brigam Young University in the fall of 1987. He won the 100 and 200 meter race at the 1991 NCAA championships and that same year, though finishing 5th in the 100 meter race at the Tokyo World championships, broke the African record with a time of 9.96.
