Last Saturday, the Republic of Guinea's second president, Lansana Conté, was evacuated from Conakry to Geneva, gravely ill. Twenty-two years ago, in March 1984, the first president, Ahmed Sékou Touré, was evacuated, similarly ill, from Conakry to Cleveland, Ohio. He died there, and one week later, a group of officers - led by Conte - took power in a coup d'état. Guineans then danced in the streets ...
