Dear editor,

I am a citizen of Lesotho and a woman. I'd like to correct your angle on this article " Women's lib not quite there yet". It is not true to say that before the Married Person's Equality Act was passed women were not able to get loans from the banks whether married or not.

Women who were not married could get loans from banks no questions asked. While Women who were married needed to have their husbands sign a consent form if they were married in community of property (which is in most cases), while their husbands were not required to do the same.

It is also not factually true to say that men now need their wives' consent if they need to take out loans as if the system has now reversed. It simply means that married couples are encouraged to discuss their financial matters and plan them together, without women being undermined.

This Act would obviously be difficult to understand for women in rural areas who don't work and completely rely on their husband's income and wouldn't on average make any transactions independantly. But for the many women who are earning money and contributing to the family's financial wellbeing, this Act has been an answer. It is also very important to those women who are not Divorced but Legally Separated and would not want to request consent on how to use their hard earned money from estranged husbands.

I hope my point can contribute positively in the background of Lesotho's society. We rely on your media house to disseminate accurate information, keep up the good work.

Thanks you.
