The Liberian Government has accelerated a major clean-up of the capital, Monrovia, ahead of U.S. President George Bush's visit to Liberia on February 21.
I would also like to congratulate Madam Sirleaf on this HISTORIC VISIT! It is indeed a great gesture, symbolizing the long standing relationship between the two nations. What annoys me about this visit is that Liberians are being compelled by its govt to clean up for a visiting President (George W. Bush). How much will this clean up cost the country? Other dignitaries have visited Liberia in the past, yet Liberians were not subjected to this level of housecleaning. Besides, when has President Bush ever order the citizens of DC to clean up becuase an African Head of State was arriving? On the eve of Madam Sirleaf Visit to Washington DC, I visited DC and the city was filthy as usual. I'm not oppose to Bush visit to Liberia, nor do I consider Ellen's decision to clean up Monrovia a bad idea. I would rather Madam Sirleaf makes cleaning Monrovia a frequent priority, rather than cleaning to appease a guest.

I just want to say to the writer comparing Africa to DC INTERMS OF CLEANING , it is just like DIE and SLEEP,DC is already clean , organised, so when African leaders are visiting there , they will mmet it clean , but for Monrovia , the city is congested , dirty .For a special personality like Peace MAker and African loving president like President Bush visiting liberia , he needs arousing welcome, to see a clean liberia , smelling fresh air . Moreover , i want to congratulate Md Sirleaf our brave President for having such a wonderful man in our country, it is all due to her hard work, keep it up mama president , may the Lord continue to give you wisdom and protect you . Finally , i am asking all Liberians to come out in full force , to welcome this honorable man that is coming to relieve us from hardship , poverty and create more job opportunities for us , long live president Bush , long live president Sirleaf. i HOPE HE WILL DONATE MORE TO lIBERIA THAN ALL THE OTHER COUNTRIES HE VISITED. Sekou, I'm not sure if you ever visited DC, but that city is filthy, dirty and ridiculously smelly. Philly and DC are the only two U.S cities that have dumper in the backyard. So, Sekou I'm not convince by your argument. Besides, I'm not opposing the cleaning of Monrovia; rather, I'm asking the president to make cleaning a frequent priority. It make no sense to neglect a city for years, only to clean it when a dignitary is visiting.

Sekou my Guinean brother, I don't know what planet you reside on. Are you being sarcastic or an idiot.
President Sirleaf, your presidency has brought recognition to Liberia. For the President of the "Free world" to visit Liberia is a morale booster. If your goverment does not get any grant this time, the visit by President Bush to Liberia indicates that Liberia if not stable is on the road to stability. This visit will turn the eyes of investors on Liberia. I want to personally thank Pres. Bush for his interst in the people of Liberia. He got the devil off the Liberian people backs and now he will be visiting Liberia. Liberians, this is a reminder that you are gaining recognition again, Please, please for heaven sake, work together no matter your differences and help rebuild Liberia. Let put Liberia above our personal interest. Long live Pres. Sirleaf, Pres. Bush and the people of Liberia. God bless. Polo of Phila

A US President's Visit to Liberia!!! TELL ME, WHEN LAST DID WE HAVE SUCH A VISIT??? Congratulation President Sirleaf for inviting President George W. Bush (The Securer) to Liberia. For me, this visit is still a dream. I just cannot conceive the historic importance of such a huge recognition of our beloved country. How proud are we today has it not been for the good governance and international acceptance of President Sirleaf. Pres. Bush visit will turn a new page into the historical relationship amongst the two countries. Let all Liberians join Pres. Sirleaf in welcoming Pres. Bush to Liberia because this visit shall go down as the greatest visit ever of an American President for decades to come.
The cleaning up campaign is important to the health of the people and visitors alike. I believe the cleaning up campaign is an ongoing process and not just for the historic visit of Pres. Bush. Remember, a clean environment is essential to the health and welbeing of a vibrant society. Daniel T. Vivour Liberian-Bangkok, Thailand
when will we all be able to put our educatio to use as Liberians. It seems to be that the civil war washed away our brains. Why will the visit of Bush and his wife be a great deal to Liberians when the Government is spending thousands of dollars to prepare for his visit. When there is no food for patriotic Liberians to eat on a daily basis.Don't paint yourself fine on the outside when your inside is urgly.Open your eyes Liberians and feel what others are feeling about you.Let me make you to understand this man called Bush visit to Africa/Liberia.America is trying to built a centre command in Africa and the only back ward country that supported their idea was Liberia. Why you think that Africa supper Power Nigeria didn't support the idea.We may over look them in many ways but, when it comes to making sound decisions for Africa they always do.If you know your history well,it tells you that the first visiting U.S president came to Liberia to see the U.S Troops that were station in Liberia at the time to fight the Nazi using the Omega Towel that was built for that purpose. So Bust visit is of no suprise to me at all.Had it not been for that Centre Command stuff,Bush wouldn't have footed to Africa.

Thanks to all peace loving Liberians who faught hard to make the visit of President and Mrs. Bush a success. My heartfelt thanks and appreciatio go to our dearest president, Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf for writing a very big historic paragraph in the history of Liberia.
Liberians, let's seee and let's learn. I can't really recall since how many years a US president, not former but current is visiting Liberia with his wife. This is indeed a big chapter in our Liberian history that our children's children will learn in times to come. Let's learn and be the eye-openers for those whose eyes are not open yet, I am speaking with wisdom here where only the wise will understand.

Bravo Liberia! It's historic indeed that Bush who has been to the motherland since 03 or 02 is coming to visit! As the old saying goes cleanliness is next to godliness. Or something to that effect. But is shameful to see shacks and hazardess buildings on the roadside in a metropolis as Monrovia! And it is hurtful to see people living in such an unsantized environment! The early fathers of Pan-Africanism and African leaders who preached self help, self-discipline and regional cooperation would be astonished. Whatever happened to putting their words to action and taking pride in one's self, environment and roots? Have pride and clean up you surroundings not live in it! Life expectancies double when the environment is safe, clean and people friendly!
P.S. I still consider Bush to be the warrior in chief...
President visit to Liberia:
This is a great time for Liberia and the great leadership of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. I whole heartedly accept the visit of President Bush to Liberia and hope that his visit will highlight the effort by President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf to transform Liberia and open the door for national and international investment and other development initiatives for Liberia. I extend my thanks and appreciation to President Bush and the people of the United States for assisting Liberia and making it possible for formal president Charles Taylor to leave Liberia. Liberia needs now to work harder to find a workable solution to the system of corruption in Liberia. It is also about time for Liberia to work harder to uplift the spirit of the working poor people in Liberia; by making sure that goods and services are marketed properly and made affordable for the poor. It is also a time for Liberia to give first hand information and acknowledgment for the efforts that the United States is making to fight and the prevention of malaria diseases in Liberia. Taking the initiative to clean Liberia must not only be looked at the coming of president Bush; it must be looked at the opportunity and the proud willingness of Liberians to take control of their cities and communities by making sure that they are cleaned and healthy for living. Liberia is a civilize nation and we can do better to compete with other civilized nations in the world. Welcome president to Liberia!!
Molley
Thanks Molley - indeed a very nice piece you wrote.
Liberians have got to understand that poverty is no execuse for a dirty environment. After living in the States for so many years, I am amazed by the way most Liberians hide behind poverty to keep their enviroments dirty. As a direct result, I srongly believe that the environment plays a key role in how often we get SICK.
It's time we begin to feel proud of ourselves and our country. The government can not do eveything for us. Those makeshift shacks really look very bad on our streets in Monrovia as well as the rural areas, too. I sometimes find it difficult to label Monrovia a city, because it's completely engulfed in trash.
We need to stop building more trash on our streets!
Jake
Do we have to waite for pending official visit of a V.I.P. to Liberia before we clean our city? The Liberian Government has to remember that Monrovia is the face of Liberia. This is where all vistors come first before going to other parts of the country. It is about time for the Government to take priority of keeping the city and its environs cleaned at all time. The Government should also remember that investers who come to Liberia will take a serious look at a city where they will first come before they start any business in the country.
These are few of the important steps the Government of Liberia can take to make the city look much better: (1) Establish and ordance that the City Hall or City Police can enforce aggressively with penalties and jail time or fines for those who will violate it. (2) Prohibit the building of shalks and urgly market stalls along the streets or certain distance from the streets.(3)Establish mini market grounds in neighborhoods (depending of the population of the neighborhood). (4)build garbage desposal bins where garbage will be deposed for collection. (5)Create senic environment along the RIA high way.(6) create jobs for street sweepers/cleaners (like the one going on now for George Bush's visit and the one we saw during the inauguaration week. Many more the Government could do to keep the city clean.

THANKS BE TO GOD FOR GIVING US A LEADER THAT FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME HAS PROVING TO US (Liberians and the world)that her government is capable of bringing PEACE, hope AND DEVELOPEMENT to this our belove nation(LIBERIA) of which even some of those WHO help to destroyed it are enjoying THE REINS today.THIS VISIT IS A FOLLOW UP CALL BY PRESIDENT BUSH TO MAKE SURE THAT INDEED MR.CHARLES TAYLOR IS OUT("MR.TAYLOR MUST LEAVE,AND MUST LEAVE NOW).THIS IS A CALL THAT GOT LIBERIA FREE TODAY .THEREFORE, PRESIDENT AND MRS. GEORGE W BUSH THANKS AND WELCOME- WELCOME - TO THE LAND THAT YOU ONCE FREE FOR US (LIBERIANS).AND TO MA-ELLEN,I HAVE NOTHING TO GIVE YOU,BUT PRAY THAT GOD WILL CONTINUES TO GUARD YOU AS YOU LEAD OUR NATION. FROM JOE MULBAH KOLLIEGBO,MARYLAND, U.S.A
Great thanks also to God, our heavenly father for given us a wise leader, mostly a very educated President, Liberia is the first friend to America if you do look at any country from the continent of Africa, this is a complete sign of peace to Liberia, if the united states President can chose to vist the Republic of Liberia means, there is complete peace in Liberia, big thanks to Ma Helle and also to the United Nations and troops that are station in Liberia not for getting about country who are supporting financially, i do welcome your great aid to my country Liberia, Mr. Bush i do hope that your visit will promote lot of educations, we need your big help, we want you to buld atleast another 5 more high schools let them be name after you and some great leader of the United States, like your Father. and improve our University with some equipment needed, this will help lot of young people to stop thinking of evil in my country, not only health, but Eduction should be one of your main priority. A. David. base in Thailand.
I will First of all like to give a big thanks to God our father for given us a great Leader, mostly a Educated and caring mother who has love for her country, for taking upon herself to invert our big brother America's President to the Republic of Liberia, what a great thanks to you mon, Mr. Bush you are welcome to LIBERIA, WE CAN'T NEVER EVER FORGET THIS visit, not with standing let your visit not only be for Health but also education, we will be too happy if you can help provide some equipments needed at our University and and help buld another 2 more high schools to be name honor of you that will be a great proud for you. thanks to grand ma, we love you and will always be by your side and continual to pray for you. mostly i, May God bless you.
First of all, president Bush visit to Liberia won't benefit our country. If Ammerica was such a good friend, the war in Liberia shouldn't have lasted for 14 years. By the way, where was big brother America when we needed him the most? Remember, America refused to send trop Liberia when UN asked. It was our very own African brothers from Nigeria who came to our aide. With all trops sent to Liberia from various countries, there is not a single American. With all the comments I read, there isn't a single thanks to Nigeria. It's a complete disrespect to Nigeria; a country that saved us from being send to our early graves. After 14yrs of blood shared, most Liberians still depend on America.I was shocked when I heard that the streets are being cleaned up. Is there the only time the streets should be clean? when Bush is coming? Why do we continue to wordshipe America instead of God? Now that Bush is no long in Liberia let see if street will be clean up.
Bravo!Madam president on this historical achievement. It is my fervent hope and prayer that this visit be felt by my fellow liberians in every way (pratically) possible relative to reawakening the liberian dream and that (almost) lost hope. alfred, pensylvannia, U S A
I'm happy and pleased with this goverment. Frist time in the history of liberia. to have a good presendent like this woman, she doing fine. Let pot hands around her to build our belove country libria.
God bless Liberia
I think the visit of George W. Bush which I believe is currently underway in Monrovia is a PLUS to Monrovia and Liberia as a whole. Oh yes, the cleaning and setting up is and should actually be in place before this all-important Visitor appears. But I'm personally looking forward to what this visit holds for Liberia for now and in the unforeseen future. Am not in the known as to whether Bush is the first American Chief Executive to set foot our Motherland. But if he is, then history will do justice to this record. What I will advise my present leaders is that the government does all it can to take advantage of what this visit has to offer and channel it into further developing our emerging nation so that not us only, but posterity will benefit as well. I will encourage our leaders to also press for the permanent stationing of the US future AFRICOM Project on the Liberian soil with no resrvations, for this will primarily provide world class defense for our country and more diversified trainings for our already robust and upcoming security division. It will of course, provide descent and high class jobs for those who will be qualified and many more benefits. So, Mama Sirleaf and team, keep on pressing on. May God bless your every move as you pursue your goal to transform Liberia into an envy of the nations.
