President Umar Yar' Adua had, in a letter dated December 7, 2007, to the Senate requested that it (Senate) should ratify the Green Tree Treaty as demanded by the 1999 Constitution. If the Senate ratifies the Treaty, Bakassi would be deemed to have been formally ceded to Cameroon. But the oil-rich Bakassi Peninsula in Cross River State was "ceded" to Cameroon in 2006 by the administration ...
Hi !!! I think it's high time our leaders be they those at the senate or at the national assembly stop fueling flames of discord nd hatred. I may not like to call some of them stooges but I think they deserve the appelation. Why do I say this? Former president Obasanjo didn't sign the Green tree agreement with Cameroon in his bed room. This treaty was done in the open in far away U S and considering the government set up. OB has advisers paid by the federal gov't on such issues. and the entire nation knew really what was going on except the few senate members who are now pretending they went into auditory hibination during that time. O B didn't give Bakassi to Cameroon and then just left office. He however still ruled Nigeria for quite a while. Why didn't the so called senators or the national assembly meet in an extra-ordinary session to say " Mr president you have erred"?
Spare us this funny debate on what has been history and start looking for a means of rehabilitating our brothers who have been displaced. Just the amount of money embezzled by some top officials can build a new modern town for these people. Look at the state of Isreal which has the welfare of it's citizens at heart, the build new towns for the needy. What resources do they have as compared to us? I'm sick at the way African behave towards one another. Instead of chasing the substance , senators are chasing the shadow. Do you think the principal witnesses to this agreement will accept that Nigeria in what ever circumstance retakes Bakassi? No way, they won't let their prestige be down played by our nation. In case of such an attempt, Cameroon will be heavily armed to the detriment of Nigeria and the consequences will be greatly felt by Nigeria not Camerroon.
Senate please spend useful time in looking for a solution to the displaced. Mr senators You better respect heirachy. because the same will be for President Yara'dua if he signs any agreement either for peace or war. If president Obasanjo didn't sign the green tree accord then war would still have been going on there. He did it for all Nigerians. Consider his plight for peace.(to be continued)
