Nigeria: Wind, Nuclear Energy Solution to Power Problem - Minister - Daily Trust

The Minister for Science and Technology Mrs. Grace Ekpiwhre has said that to solve the present epileptic power supply in the country, Nigeria must diversify its energy sources and fully deregulate the power sector for effective private sector participation.

Why do people like ministers of state who are supposed to have basic general knowledge make statements that portrays them as tryint to BUILD CASTLE IN THE AIR? Everyone knows that the need for power in Nigeria is NOW not in five or ten years and the needed capacity is high. The solution to Nigeria's power crisis suggested by the minister to recourse to wind power, nuclear power etc. is far from pragmatic or reasonable considering the fact that the country has an abundance of natural gas, oil and coal. Besaides fossil fuel plants, almost all the alternatives suggested by the minister are fairly ESOTERIC. For wind power plant for instance, without any basis, it would take years to complete background studies to choose locations and besides the fact that there is not likely to be trained personel, the total output may be way less than required capacity, the technology is not yet as well understood world wide, the reliability is way less than a fossil fuel plant. For nuclear power, there is no background study, no trained personnel and, for a country that cannot guarantee safety running simple gas pipelines, nuclear safety hazards will be an insurmountable nightmare. It will take many years of planning to get nuclear plant running in Nigeria. Without wasting further time looking at the other esoteric options suggested by the minister, it is without any doubt that THE EASIEST, MOST EFFICACIOUS AND MOST FEASIBLE WAY TO SOLVE THE POWER PROBLEM IN NIGERIA IS TO USE OUR ABUNDANT FOSSIL FUELS INCLUDING GAS, OIL AND COAL!

we should not be left behind, the minister view is in the right direction towards reducing CO2 emission. the first writer no nothing about renewable hence need to read and find out what the world is doing to save the climate.

if given the opportunity we can develop Nigeria energy sector and in no distance time energy problem will be a thing of past. i am a Nigerian and believe that one day we will solve all our problem. Alot of Nigerian are here in United Kingdom read hard to see how to save Nigeria. dauda postgraduate student, Renewable Energy London.
