The UN Human Rights Council's failure to renew the mandate of the expert for the Democratic Republic of Congo is a betrayal of its responsibilities toward the Congolese people, Human Rights Watch said today.

Now is not the time for the UN Human Rights Council to back away from its work in the DRC. Turning a blind eye to the continued depraved abuse of women by militia groups and Congolese army troops will make the January 23 ceasefire just another piece of paper.
