It is long overdue! Ethiopia, according to various geological studies, holds the third or fourth rank in geothermal potential after Russia, Newzealand and Iceland. With crude oil prices hitting ever new record, the feasiblitiy of exploiting this clean energy resource is ever more viable. The folks from Iceland know it well. If only a fraction of Ethiopia's potential were to be realized the Country can benefit double fold. First and foremost, it will get clean energy. As forseen by the latest trend, secondly, it can sell is as a commodity on the cap and trade system as envisioned by the latest WTO Talks about cutting Green House Gazes.
Furthermore, Iceland and Ethiopia, for your information, share a lot in common. Aside from the fact that they sit on major volcanic tremor, both are mountainous Nations. The Semen and Bale Mountains are mentioned amongst the 'must' visit for any ecotourists. Iceland benefits from such tourists who like to hike their rugged terrian, so can Ethiopia!
This seems like an unusual relationship for countries so far apart. I wonder how this project was intitiated. Does anyone know what company will be providing the drilling and engineering services for this?
