RETIRED South African army generals investigating post-election violence in Zimbabwe have uncovered "shocking levels" of state-sponsored terror, sources close to them say.
You can only hide the facts for so long. The Zimbabwean police detaining diplomats puts any notion that the leadership of Zimbabwe is in anyway worthy of serious dialogue out of the question. They cannot they cannot respect human rights they cannot respect the status of foreign diplomats but they expect to be respected on the worlds political stage? I'm sure eventually all of the evidence of the attrocities in Zimbabwe will be available thanks to the press who these days cant even use a satellite telephone without being arrested, they are doing a much needed service to the people of Zimbabwe under very difficult conditions and I for one applaud their efforts to get the truth out to the world. I'm sure Mugabe would prefer us all to read the zimbabwe herald only but he isnt in charge everywhere, even though he probably thinks he is in his dreams.
Former White South African Defense Force generals have their own credibility issues, especially their involvement in the old Apartheid regime. They themselves were part of a system that violated human rights of the majority. Are they truly object or trying to cover their own sins? The have they admitted any sins they committed to the South African Truth Commission! So many questions...that one wonders if this is just another propaganda. I remain doubtful of their evaluation or even the credibility of this manufactured report. We Africans do not need to accept just about any article written on Zimbabwe. There is a lot of garbage!!!
General Gilbert L. Ramano's career is a matter of record Phiri and from 1998-2004 he occupied the rank of General. He relinguished the role of SANDF chief of staff on the 6th July 2004 after 42years service, 30 of those yeaars were spent fighting for Umkhonto weSizwe, the armed wing of the ANC. He was replaced in his tenure as Chief of Staff by Major General Solle Shoke also of the ANC. I am glad you will be able to sleep soundly knowing that I have reassured you that the South African generals sent to Zimbabwe were indeed black.
You'd think the fact that Mbeki wanted these generals to brief him would be evidence enough to make them acceptable to the likes of Phiri. But no, out comes the usual denial and references to apartheid etc. Next Phiri will be telling us retired SA army generals are trying to recolonize Africa.
He's right about one thing though, "Africans do not need to accept just about any article written on Zimbabwe." Does that mean you'll stop reading the rubbish in the Herald now Phiri?
How are we so 100% sure that the oppositions are not indirectly sponsorring the crimes in Zimbabwe to give Mugabe a bad name? Let's go beyond the immediate actors pls.
yes we really have to limit the amount of excitement in the zimbabwe elections because history will reflect that the white world wants a stake in africa still and they will go to any extent to cause chaos...
in this time the Black Africa must be master of his own environment, AFRICa without any apologizes to the western world.
Africa for the Africans at home and abroad.
in this time we want to do away with all african leaders that have a colonial heart, meaning they look to the western world for support; Africa is the wealthiest continent on earth, only bad management cause us to be the poorest nation....
awake from your slumber Africa and awake.
The west isn't interested in taking over Africa, get your head out of the sand.
Come on mindy, the west does not want to let go of Africa so what are you talking about. You are the one that needs to pull your head out of the clouds - Africa MUST deal with the east.
The west let go of Africa decades ago, it's only involved in your propaganda brainwashed imagination. Too hard for you to admit that Mugabe is the source of Zim's problems so you have to blame the west. How convenient, yet stupid.
Minddumb, the western world wants to control the world. Especially white anglo Britons, whose world fortune scale is on a step nose dive. Lets face the fact, if you hard no interest on zimbabwe you would not be writing stories on Zimbabwe on a daily basis. BBC now has propaganda sections called Ester. Minddumb, you are out of sync with most of us on this website. We have already rejected your know it all altitude. You are clearly not one of us. You Stick!!!
Show me your evidence Phiri because all you ever post is ignorant rubbish with no facts to back up any of your statements. I wonder, when you do these "anti-west" lectures of yours, are you required to show any facts or do you just wave Herald articles at the audience?
Like Kuba you think that because I write on this forum that is somehow proof that the west wants to control Zimbabwe. Well let me remind you, as I did him, that I lived in Zim for 25 years and still have friends and family there. Why shouldn't I be concerned for Zimbabwe's wellbeing?
Besides, when has concern ever been proof of intended invasion? What a completely stupid link to make, you are as dumb as Kuba. Using that ridiculous logic Britain wants to invade Tibet because so many British people have posted messages on forums about human rights abuses there.
What a shame, Phiri, that you don't devote the energy you waste on your misguided obsession about "western colonization" on doing something good for Zimbabwe.
I really like two statements made by Redemption Yard. They are "Black Africa must be master of his own environment" and "Africa is the wealthiest continent in the world only bad management causes us to be the poorest" Well Redemption Yard, if you reside in Zimbabwe look around you. How many Westerners do you see? How many white solders do you see killing Zimbabweans and causing millions to flee to South Africa and Mozambique. If Mugabe is such a great leader - why is all this happening? You see ,you have been brainwashed to think that Africa is in bad shape because of the white world. Those countries in bad shape, it is because of their leaders' greed, mismanagement, want of political power or tribalism. How many people died in Ruwanda - black brother killing black brother? If you are Zimbabwean, I suggest you look closely at Mugabe and you will find the culprit glaring at you in the face.
Not only are the MDC sponsoring the violence, they are giving out sticks and knives to their supporters so they can beat and cut themselves for press articles so as to make Mugabe look bad.
Honestly, how stupid can you be? :-S
Someone in a previous post commented on the generals being white. How do you know the retired generals are white?
They weren't white they were black but it suits someones purposes to say they were white. They reported unfavourably on what is going on in Zimbabwe so they are lying and white. It's so painfully tragic it's almost funny.
My observation is that when certain minority groups in Southern Africa want to give credence to a particular article of interest, they cite people who never really said the words they are said to have said. This story to me sounds like that! A casual comment in a relaxed atmosphere about violence in Zimbabwe could elicit a response of concern from the generals. That would be normal for most people, and that includes myself. It is when things are twisted and spanned into political football games, that I get concerned. Such is the case in this story.
"What we have heard and seen is shocking. We have heard horrific stories of extreme brutality and seen the victims," said one of the generals.
"We have seen people with scars, cuts, gashes, bruises, lacerations and broken limbs, and bodies of those killed. It's a horrifying picture."
Does this sound like a casual comment in a relaxed atmosphere to you? Denial to the point of looking foolish Mr Mugabe would be proud.
Oh…. Now it is one of the Generals now. And not the generals!! Interesting! And you Minddumb and others are now sounding more and more like the useless discussions on Africa by the BBC on Line. Please don’t start that propaganda thing from the BBC on Line. It has become so shameful, that for a change, I don’t have to remind my students that it is a propaganda machine on Africa and especially Zimbabwe.
Again Phiri I ask you to provide some evidence instead of mouthing off your useless opinion. If you really are a teacher you should appreciate facts. Let's see some.
So what you need to see to be satisfied is, "All of the generals standing in a line said in unison that things were not ideal in zimbabwe" and if one of them got a single word wrong then they would have to say it all again or you wouldn't believe them? The South African envoys cant have a spokesperson? Like I said denial to the point of looking foolish. You have students? I do hope their parents dont pay for you to teach them because your grammar is atrocious and as for research skills, you seem only to use the Zimbabwe Herald.
Ok lets try this again quotes from a statement in the SA House of Assembly, "The following is not just news headlines, it is the reported reaction of four international ambassadors - and retired South African army generals, investigating post election violence in Zimbabwe… “Shocking levels of state sponsored terror…” “Extreme brutality...” - “Murder…” - “…a horrifying picture” - “…absolutely urgent the world sees what’s going on.” - “…violence has to stop."
I know that wont satisfy you and you're just too blinkered to see it all stacking up against your beloved Mugabe but it's all coming out now Phiri the world will find out what has been going on in Zimbabwe and as I said in an earlier post he may yet share a cell with charles taylor.
Glyph, stop being a "wisecracker" on this website. When you poeple open your mouths, few Africans listern to you!! It's a fact. That is what is going on on BBC. They have loaded the african debates with sour grapes apartheid and Rhodesian fools.
Thank you for that reasoned and comprehensive response to my post Phiri, I think you just agreed with me without even trying.
hmmmmmmm? "Sour grapes"? wonder where I've heard that before? *LOL*
Glyph, I too wonder where I've heard this nonsense of "sour grapes" from before. Oh I remember. It's from Phiri and Kubatana. Phiri did you mention "my students"? Do you mean to tell me you teach? My goodness, I wonder what nonsensical material you feed them with. Not in a thousand years would I have imagined you taught because your way of thinking is not only from Noah's Ark, but it is suppressive and anti progressive, and full of hate. Let go of hate.
I think he starts each lesson with "now students, turn to page one ... of The Herald". :-D
As evidenced by the brain drain that has hit South Africa over the last few years, and the number of South
Africans living in Europe (see http://R2P2G.eu) it's a sad fact that many South Africans themselves felt
threatened by a sort of "Xenophobia" when they lived in their own country and decided to leave.
Carducci : You have got that right. I am one of the brain drain that left beautiful ZA during the apartheid era, because I wanted my children to grow up in a country where everyone is treated with respect, dignity and compassion. The present events have confirmed to me that I did the right thing. The new ZA is turning out to be worse than the old one. There is no law and order, the brutal killings and burning (necklacing) of one's own fellow man is barbaric. Africa has a history of brutality, violence, corruption, genocide and destruction of infra structure on a larger scale than any other continent. It is still the dark continent. Judging by many of the comments here, one can see why. My heart aches for the Africans who have a conscience and looked forward to new and better beginnings in the Rainbow Nation. It will not happen.

By STAFF REPORTER
Published: Wednesday 14 May 2008 these are Mugabes comments on President Mwanawasa

The ruling party, which is gearing up for a bruising presidential election run-off between Mr Mugabe and opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai, said it was disappointed with Mr Mwanawasa because he had failed to call for the lifting of sanctions imposed by Western countries.
It said that, as the chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Mr Mwanawasa had been tasked to ask the United States and Britain to scrap the "illegal" sanctions.
Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mr Patrick Chinamasa, who chairs Zanu PF's media sub-committee, said the sanctions had contributed to Mr Mugabe's embarrassing defeat in the first round of the elections.
"SADC undertook to call for th
