New Vision (Kampala)
13 May 2008
I read with disappointment an article on the closure of Lira Spinning Mills in The New Vision of March 28, 2008. The milling factory was sold to Jinda International Textiles Corporation (JITCO), a Chinese firm, which was expected to bring in new technology and create 500 jobs, besides increasing the value and amount of textile exports.

I read your article on the cotton industry in Uganda. Your country with the abundance of labour, fabulous soil, peaceful population should be able to attract and retain textile and clothing manufacturing companies. With the fair trade issues, and of ourse the entire world moving to more sustainable fabrics..and dyes ...your country should have a policy in place to vet, and encourage textiles, clothing industries.
We have a web site in SA www.ifashion.co.za and we actively promote, enourage young emerging entreprenuers...and old economic businesses in the Apparel/textiles/retail businesses to interact with each other.
Another intresting component is educational instutitions that strengthen, nurture and grow your talent....
Just do it - that should be the motto for the govt. of the day...
Just my own insight into this fabulous industry...I love it and Africa should become the new "china" of the world - regretfully there is no spell check - so there may be spelling mistakes - kindly excuse this....Cathy
