South Africa: Xenophobic Mayhem Hammers the Currency - Business Day

THE rand slid sharply against major currencies yesterday as photographs of xenophobic violence hit the front pages of leading international news- papers, tarnishing SA's image in the eyes of foreign investors.

Author: Think about it

Did you really think it would'nt.

The pictures coming from South Africa these days are shocking and shameful for South Africans of goodwill, for Africans, and for all of us who believed SA is kind of island of democracy and tolerance in a continent ravaged by stupidity associated to old pals: famine, corruption, civil war, etc..

We were wrong, as we have forgotten that in SA there are also stupid Black Africans who think that behaving as monkies is the way of solving problems. I am sorry if my words hurted someone, but I could not see other thing than a monkery behavoir.

Rational people never would hurt the good and worldwide admirable image of a country such as SA, known not only by its world renowed legends: Mandela, Dr. Barnard, Desmond Tutu, De Klerk, Charlizie, and others) but also by its democratic and unique process of national reconciliation, strong economy and civil society as well as lovely preserved zoobot parks and sites.

I country could not be rubbish only because some of its citizens are frustrated with unemployment and poverty, which I believe could be explained within their lack of skills rather than on foreigners from others African countries. By the way, why these guys are targeting only poor Black Africans? This does not mean an apology to violence against other outsiders.

Far from that, what I want to bring into discussion is the anachronism of this kind of actions. The stupid guys are targeting people who left their countries mainly because of bad political and economic situations back home, some of them because of political and military actions of the South African government during the apartheid era. The recently ended civil wars in Mozambique and Angola could be cited as such examples. Okay, surely these South African guys may not have benefited directly from that kind of politic, yet they are still South Africans, the continental powerhouse, which imply that they are somewhat in better conditions compared to the poor of the neighboring countries.

Just imagine how many Zimbabweans would need to leave their once economycally stable country, if it wasn´t the desastrous administration of Mugabe and his militias? What have done the xenophobic zelots to help oust Mugabe and stop the constant violation of human rights in Zimbabwe? Why these guys didn´t hold meetings to protest against dictatorship in Zimbabwe and elsewhere in the continent as it happened everywhere in the world during the apartheid era?

Besides, weren´t these guys stupid ones, would they meltdown the good image of their country just when it is spotlighted thank to the 2010 Soccer World Cup? Would they help hurt badly the South African national economy, beginning with local currency compared to dollar and euro? Don´t these stupid guys know that foreign investors would not influx or keep their money in an instable country?

Now it is time for the government of Thabo Mbeki and all South Africans of goodwill to stop the guys in time to heal the NATION and restore the image of the country before the 2010 Soccer World Cup Finals.
