Thank God for the meeting and I hope this truth and reconciliation commission (TRC)will not open more conflict between Liberians. THANKs! James Komah Gbarpolu county
Had this been a feud between just the Johnson and Doe’s families, the truce or reconciliation would have made more sense. And had the person calling for and mediating this truce or reconciliation been neutral in the conflict, the gestures would have garnered admiration even from her most devout critics. Isn’t she implicated in the November 12, 1986 coup attempt (perhaps the genesis of the Krahn and Gio conflict) and the December 24, 1989 rebel invasion? These dead olive branches been exchanged between the Johnson and Doe’s families now and the Tolbert and Doe’s families before miss their marks horribly and their supporters either do not get the whole picture or are insensitive to the feelings of the entire population. Are the Johnson, Tolbert and Doe families or clans the only ones affected by horrors of the past and present? Or, are we to believe that theirs are the only lives that matter? The TWP’s long reign over Liberia included the massacre and enslavement (on the island of Fernando Po) of thousands of Liberians; not to mention the humiliation of a million more. Doe executed the President of Liberia and the heads of thirteen permanent Liberian families during his coup d’état on April 12, 1980. And to maintain that power, he tried to exterminate the Gio tribe. Prince Johnson (to avenge the massacres of his fellow Nimbians) and Taylor’s (to avenge the executions of those thirteen and to restore Americo-Liberian rule) crusades to topple the Doe’s government, killed, in the most heinous ways, more than a quarter of a million Liberians. Our president, the Iron Lady and other supporters of the NPFL took advantage of the rift between the tribes by beginning its invasion in those parts of the country. And as expected and hoped for by the NPFL leadership, this move exacerbated Doe’s anger and hatred to the point that he ordered the complete annihilation of the Gio Tribe. Understandably, this sent thousands of Gio and Mano young men and women to the camps of the NPFL for enlistments. These young men and women uncompromising anger and brutal tactics were felt by everyone and anything in the most savage way on their match to the capital. Don’t these hearts need mending too? Don’t those minds deserve peace too? Or their broken hearts and minds don’t matter? Now fast forward to a few days ago to Prince Johnson’s appearance before TRC, he was specifically asked if the Madame President was one of the founders or supporters of the NPFL? To which he simply replied, “… she fought dictatorship…” and made it possible for all Liberians, including himself, to enjoy the peace they have today. Once again, as warlords and recycled politicians continue to scratch each other backs by hiding one another’s identities and the extent of their involvement in the conflicts at the TRC, the Liberian people continue to draw the short end of the stick. If our President is interested in genuine peace and reconciliation among all Liberians like she has repeated claim, she would have been the first to appear before that Commission right after she officially opened it on that cool January morning. This would not have only given a much needed credibility to the TRC from the very beginning, it would have also compelled others to honestly follow suit. Instead, she made a vague promise that if the TRC’s statement takers requested for her she would appear. Few weeks later, however, she reneged even on that simple and empty promise by saying that her appearance before the TRC would create a “debacle” in the process, but in that same breath, she said that her upcoming book would be a tell-all. The TRC was set up to try to mend the hearts and minds of all Liberians, not just three families. But just like on that cool January morning before, with these recent antics, the president has recklessly and irresponsibly undermined the authority and credibility of the TRC once again and dishonored the memories of the hundred of thousands who have lost their lives.
Boy.. What an insult. This President don't really get it. It seems to me she is "IRROGANT" I am just following what my brother SWAYLEE brilliantly wrote. Haven't read his comments I just need not to add more. Thousands of our fellow Liberian lost their lives senselessly. Someone should please tell this woman that it was because of the deeds of she and her cohorts. Prince Johnson have already apologise to the Doe family. He shouldn't have done that. Hell no. Jackson Doe who enjoyed the fruits of his brother's brutallity was no where to be found when it really mattered. Please...! from all that I have read, Jackson Doe is the one who is threatening to bring instability in this so called democracy. This man need to be fired, period.
