The Elders (Johannesburg)
23 September 2008
I am deeply disturbed by recent events in our beloved county. The so-called recalling of the President of our land fits the pattern of the settling of scores and the throwing about of weight that has happened post-Polokwane.

We had Mr Mbeki for over 9 years as president. We should have let him serve out his term. By being impatient we have brought the country and the ANC to disrepute. Mr Mbeki's opponents have behaved in a most immature way. A few more months of Mr Mbeki would not have done any harm. I know he is not very charismatic but he could not have done any damage. His opponents have actually done a lot of harms to RSA's stability and good name.
The Archbishop and I do not have much in common, but when he's right he's right.
