Following the 'Break the Silence' Congo Week at the end of October, Kambale Musavuli discusses the importance of raising awareness around the crisis in the DR Congo. As a Congolese granted asylum in the USA in 1998, Musavuli urges the global community, and African-Americans in particular, to revitalise international attention on the Congo as a means of shedding light on the ongoing conflict and ...

Born in D R of Congo and grew up in Canada, I'm just sick and tired of how this world's been treating Africans. Of how Africans treat each other (South Africans burning their own african brothers) just because they happen to be refugees in South Africa. All I have to say about D R of Congo is that this country never had and will never have a group of people that consider themselves as minorities. This country was not built by immigrants like USA and Canada. Each tribe in Congo has a very deep root, a determined territory. A Chief that recognize his neighbours and lives in peace and harmony. Those who pretend to be Congolese and take weapons to kill or terrorise real Congolese, rape women....your days are numbered.
So what if Congo was not built on migrant base? Do you see your logic here? Are you going to say that three generation of Banyamulenge who have been there since 1800 do not deserve to be Congolese? If it were not for the Berlin Conference they may be Rwandan or vice-versa. What is important is to realise this and get on with life without prejudicing ones life. I aggree with your first assessment of treatement of and by Africans...sadly the root of it is right in front of your eyes: GREED. For a continent so rich in culture, and every aspect of material possession can't pull itself together. We are by far the only continent that has not understood the old adage of: "There is advantage in numbers" Instead what do we do, we kill each other, turn a blind eye to our neighbour misery and so on...
Is the nationality of Banyamulenge still a problem after all kinds of laws have been voted to grant it? If the FDLR is such threat to Rwanda, can anybody explain to me why they haven't been driven out of Congo by Rwandese who controlled Congolese army and Eastern Congo from 1997 to 2001? With such a military might, why is CNDP not attacking FDLR to defeat them instead of fighting the government?
Give me a break!
Elie.
Brother Kambale,
Thank you so much for this outstanding communication. Unlike Rwanda and Uganda, Congo lacks lobbysts for its cause at the international level. It's good to have Congolese undertake this kind of initiative and all of us,Congolese, should press forward in any capacity.
Thanks again, Elie.
