Linguistic trash. America ain't no "idea." America is a country, the head of the monster called "Western Civilization."

If, arguendo, America is an idea, then it is an idea that, philosophically speaking, needs to be objectified. And, there is the rub: objectified in whose image?

jallohlaw:

What are you writing ? It doesn't make any sense. I understand you are taking a defensive stand against the US (what happened to UK the ones who colonilised the whole world), but the US too shook off colonialism.

You are misguided Mugabe supporter who has nothing to say except indulge in victimhood and self pity in the hegemony of the USA.

The point is Africa (and Zimbabwe after they replace Mugabe) need to develop their own ideas -- whatever those are -- instead of the usaul puerile, insistent, and reactionary mumbo jumbo.

The western isn't all that overpoering in your mind at leats if Africans learnt to work together with a purpose.

PARALYSIS OF UNDERSTANDING: FIRST, REREAD MY POST---THEREIN, IF ONLY you are willing to understand, you will find clearly stated that the US is the head of a cabal and, if read in context---the context of my opus in this Website---it would be nonsensical to claim that I "stand against the US...."

Au contraire, I denounce, by and through a movement, determinate reactionary political TRADITIONS in the US, UK and France.

Regarding your moronic averment that I am a misguided Mugabe supporter: silly---is it misguided to affirm the truth? The truth that ZANU/PF, LED BY Cdr. MUGABE FORCIBLY GRABBED THE LAND THAT RHODIES STOLE FROM AFRICANS UNDER THE HEGEMONY OF CECIL RHODES,THE BRITISH IRRATIONALIST IMPERIALIST is certainly NOT MISGUIDED. Should you think otherwise, just ask the 'rhodies' how they feel about the LAND LOST FOREVER---or, shall I suppose that you hope that it will revert to 'rhodies' by and through the machinations of THE REACTION in the West?

Your claptrap about "victimhood" and similar verbiage is objectively and decisively trumped by our view that AFRICAN DIGNITY IS AN ABSOLUTE PRAGMATIC PRINCIPLE, AND THAT we Africans do not need the intellectual tutorship of the West.

Get it, rhodie with reflective wings?

Nyerere left behind a country bigger and better than the one he started with; he created Tanzania from Tanganyika and Zanzibar. To date, the union still holds.

He played a key role and worked hard to liberated, yes, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Nambia, and Angola. All freedom fighters from these countries passed through Daresalaam under the tutelage of Nyerere, including training in Tanzania.

After solidiers tried to mutiny in 1964 he build the most displined effective armies to date.

Even when Tanganyika could have got independence ahead of Uganda and Kenya he waited for those to get independent for the sake of unity.

He had the the hunility to admit that his economic ideas were a failure. He over socialised the economy. But unlike Mugabe he didn't wallow in excuses of anti-capitalist west that fought hard to make sure that his socialist agenda failed. He took responsiblity for his economic "failures".

Most importantly of all he step aside from the political spotlight when he could have stayed on for life. He knew it was time for fresh ideas.

He ultimately helped Uganda rid themselves of Idi Amin. After showing so much restraint towards Idi Amin's belligerence and sometime outright personal insults he sent his army into Uganda and helped exiled Ugandans drive Idi Amin out once and for all. This only after Idi Amin stupidily mistook his restraint for weakeness. After invaded Tanzania Nyerere had had enough.

Nyerere was the one to envy other "civilizations" and use it as an excuse to cling to the power. He translated Shakespear. He was multiculturalist before multiculturalism became an academic fascination around the world. he wore a muslim hat even though wasn't muslim he was a christian.

His was an exemplary work of what an African political hero is supposed to be.

No, it shows that all those arguements about the west this or land issues this and that are diversionary. He (and his cronies) just want to cling to power for sadistic (Mugabe) and selfish(Cronies) reasons. Zimbabwe can assert their sovereignity without grabbing other people's property, be those people Zimbabweans or not.

It proves that the issue wasn't about land which, incidentally, Mugabe and cronies have no know-how to develop. It is the old fashion power grab by an African semi-illiterate and lazy dictatorship who by happenstance found themselves in power.

It proves it is time for the Zimbabweans to ditch the dictatorship once and for all.

Here is my advice: If the white farmers are good at working the land, let them do it, the rest of Zimbabwean can sit back and enjoy the food and do other (more important) things. If Zimbabwean "leaders" cannot figure out how to do that then they don't deserve to run the country; and then get them out of there ASAP.

Your 'arguments' are stone cold circular, and the circularity is founded on your wobbly essay to evade, nay obfuscate the issue: THE LAND.

You call the land "property"? Historical and philosophical buffoon: who made the land of Zimbabwe "property"?

Cecil Rhodes, of course, the agent of British Imperialism.

Even under the unscientific positing of 'races,' you are wrong with a vengeance.

Look, Dumbeh, there are no human races: BIOLOGY refutes the construct; Euro-American traditions wallow in the UNDING.

Now, assuming you are an American, may I remind you that Obama considers himself 'black.' Or, do you have the hubris to posit an identity for THE most powerful man in the world: Obama, a 'black' man?

Imagine: the most powerful man in the world is a 'black' man: BARACK OBAMA. Your "oBAMA" may be "mixed race," but OBAMA, under American tradition, a tradition created and passed down by 'white' fathers, Obama is as black as any black as coal Sengelese.

And, dude ROCKING with the race fever, are the girls "mixed race"?

Of course, I am playing with your wobbly intellect: the issue is not black or white. Here it is, dude mix-up: An American whose ethnic heritage is African will be come January 20, 2009, will be the President of the United States of America, for the category "African-American" means Americans who trace all or part of their genealogical roots to Africa.

By the way, Rhodies are not Africans, as the whole world, except Rhodies, evidently re-cognizes.

Well thought essay, and I respect your opinion even though I beg to differ on some of the logic involved. Obama's victory from the historical point of view deserves jubilation from any African be it in the mainland or in the diaspora and I am highly convinced that the euphoria that ensued his victory is in many quarters done in good faith. Your saying the Africans have no cause to celebrate the victory of Obama is nothing short of mysticism. It is true that governance in most African states needs total reformation, but the West is neither short of its own shortcomings. The global attention that was generated during entire electoral process up to the victory of Obama should be welcomed by all aspiring Pan-Africans, not for the mere reason that a black man is voted in office, but for the fact that is has served as a stimulant and a moral booster in the hearts and minds of millions in Africa. The electoral process comparatively has shed light on ineffective and often misguided electoral systems in Africa - a reality that could serve as a check to the often rigged and biased system we have in place. I concur with you that it will be utter foolery for African's to expect miracles or bags of gold from Obama, but if for nothing, his victory has served as a motivating factor in the aspiring hearts and minds of the young and down trodden all over the world. From the expression of your grievances against Obama Sr., I could sense that you have either not read or fully understood the text of "Dreams from my Father". Despite the absence of the old man in the life of his son Obama that is, he corresponded intermittently with him, with stern emphasis on studies and discipline. This could be read from the chapter on his visit to Hawaii when Obama was still a fledging teenager. He was very concerned about his son's time spent on watching TV, and was very helpful in changing that attitude by expressing his feelings to the parents. Obama from reading has always been torn between praise for the wits and anger for the absence of his dad. If for nothing, the old man laid a path of scholarship for his son, and the mother always tried to raise him a la African / American. An effort that got Obama where he is today. Obama's victory as you said is not owed only to America. There is a web of factors that brought Obama to where he is today. Obama's first political inspiration emanated from his search for soul and involvement in the anti-apartheid movement whilst going to Junior College in California. The study of the Pan-African struggle coupled with the nostalgia of a dad lost in a continent riddled with political and civil strife gave young Obama the platform and the motivation at public speaking and political militancy. Thus one can conclude as written by the man himself that the cause for Africa in a sense was a catalyst to his excellence. Hypocrisy is rife the world over, and bad governance stretches across the globe like dirty linen, but condemnation of Afrians celebrating Obama's victory is a disservice to the sane mind of any genuine supporter of Africa or Obama himself. Our concern should not be why they celebrating, but what lessons could be gained out of this outcome, and I look forward to your next article on that subject.

In my opinion, the point the original author was attempting to put accross was that Africans must celebrate not only the success of Obama but genuinely reflect in their character and actions, to hopefully experience the kind of open democracy that elected one of their own to the highest political office in the world. We as Africans must sacrifice for effective change in governance and seek progress for our people selflessly; If we are to continue surviving.

Obama has no mandate in any African country.

He represents the interests of Americans, not Africans.

Finally, this silly focus on Obama is the flip of the Imperialist induced "learned helplessness" in the African psyche.

Get over Obama: Africans did not elect him, neither did 'blacks' nor 'whites' alone: he was elected by the American people, a 'post-racial" people, according to Obama.

Get real. First, try to understand how real politics rocks in Washington. When you do THAT, you'll mind your own business, not Obama's.

Please nuke it out with the Americans: Obama never said that racism is dead in the US. First point.

Second, Obama was elected by the US Electoral College. Now, if you have a problem with that, you change the constitution of the US in a way too obvious to mention: read the constitution.

Let me tell you something dude: that black panther clap trap (pace your approving mention of Stokely, the womanizer and Africanist pimp) works only against the Uncle Toms of the Civil Rights Movement.

Put a dip in your hip and hop with the crew of today: a generation that does not dig the race thing, at least in America.

You can take down Jesse Jackson; try Obama, you will go down, for he's got the smarts and street cred to bury wanna be Stokely, Toure, bla, bla, bla---ISMS.

Thank you, mr. Agbiti for your straight and candid opinion on the hypocrisy of our so-called Africans and leaders.

The entire black population is suffering from post-colonial psychological hatred for one another. The seed of this hatred was sown in the heart of blackmen and women by the occidental men and women. The heart is actually the seat of our intellect. The hate has become like a giant tree with a gargantuan roots that is hard to extricate from the foundation of the core thinking of our people. It is also a psychological wound that refuses to heal because the right medecine that is to heal it is coming from our open enemy(the occidental man). Though, we go to church and say that Jesus Christ is Our Saviour, yet our action towards one another proves that we lie. There are christians in every single tribe, however, a christian from one tribe feels superior, or better than another from a tribe other than his/hers, and both go to the same church, both claim Christ as God. My point is that the colonialist(occidental man) has effectively subjugated us to his system through, Education, Religion, Sport, Entertainment, Science, etc. All of our effort to develop so-called Africa is actually helping to propel the continuation of the colonial world. Whether, we are intellectuals or not we have become the zombies of the western world. In fact, it is the so-called African intellectuals who studied abroad that had become the overseers of us for the colonial powers. They take orders from their masters, with a promise of few chickens and some big toys, and they feel they have arrived in life, and they help to confuse the so-called African masses with all kinds of divisional doctrine. Therefore, I think that in order to have love for one another and dissipate ethnic or trabalism practices, we need to find few good conscienstious men and women on the continent who can take a page of lessons from Mao tse tung era. I am not advocating communism. But Mao cleaned up some forces that were infested in tribalism and ethnic practices that were holding back progress of chinese people. It is only true love that our so-called leaders need for their fellow citizens, and to unite and do for them what true free thinking men and women do for their society. We need to go to war against post colonial mind set among us in order to truly celebrate the beauty of blackness and the dissipation of tribal and ethnic practices of self hate.

I was overjoyed when I witnessed the change in American history. To see a black man win the presidential election in America, was a glorious day for me. Then my mind flashed to Africa. I became very depressed because I know, Africa will never come to this level of politics....not in my life time. People rather kill entire families to win elections. People rather condemn and cause the murders of their political rivals and their families just to be president of an African nation. There is no check and balance in African politics. Therefore, Obama's victory in America means nothing to Africa's dirty politics.
