This is an open letter to Ambassador Barnes. My concern is: Why is no effort being made by the Liberian government and the Liberian embassy in the USA to establish dual citizenship for Liberians who are American citizen? If Liberians enjoy the previledge of dual citizenship,I believe they will make emmense contribution to Liberia's developement effrot. They could live and work here in the states and at the same time take business and job opportunities to Liberia. Presently, when a Liberian becomes an American citizen, he lost his natural birth right as a born Liberian citizen. Conseqently, he or she loses all his rights and properties in his own home land. But the decision to become an American citizen does not necessarily mean the one hits his/her home land or that one has abandoned it. It is just an effort to gain an upperhand in the financial and ecinimic struggle.Because we are in a catch-22 situation, paying huge money to the medicare and social security system from which we cannot benefit if we remain liberian citizen citizen and later retired in our homeland, we are forced to seek American citizenship in order to benefit from this large money taken from us in our old age. Many countries, including Nigeria and Ghana, to name a few of our neighbors, enjoy the dual citizenship previledge. Looking at Liberia's historic relationship with the U.S., one would think that liberians too, should be citizens of the birth country and the United States when they meet the qualification. I am ashamed and disappointed when I have to apply for visa to visit my own birth country and even denied the right to own property or partake in the political affairs of my homeland because I am a naturalized American. Many are and still enjoy the birth right of their homelands! Liberia is the only exception! In view of the above, Mr. Ambassador, please make dual citizenship for Liberian-Americans one of your urgent priorities. This will help us to take the money we make here to develop our native land. We don't have to be punished for naturalizing in America. Thank your for reading this open letter. A concerned Liberian-American
