The authorities in Somalia's self-declared republic of Somaliland have urged the international community to come to its aid to avert severe food shortages and hunger due to a prolonged drought in the region.

Perhaps it is time for desperate measures. The aquatic weeds silting up the water holes are likely Typha. It does grow in Somaliland. Some of it may be contaminated with pollutants. Heavy metals are most to be feared. There is equipment available (at Kenyatta University and probably other places. If not, the UN should get some) to measure their presence and determine fitness for human consumption. Harvest some Typha from your swamps, and determine if it is edible, and if so, shove famine into the history books.
