AGAINST the general belief that Zimbabweans in exile were keeping their country afloat, a study in the southern Matabeleland region has found that most families with members living outside the country received no money and barely any meaningful food items last year.

This article really does not tell the truth. Of cause people in the rural areas have few relatives that they can connect with via modern telephones in the USA or UK. Money sent by diaspora is not meant to prevent rural populations getting Hungry. Diaspora money sent to Zimbabwe is generally sent to city dwellers who tend to be middle class by Zimbabwean stds. To pick rural populatons and make a big meal out of it, is real dishonest. The use of the rand is also not the major source used by the diaspora. Typically it is the US dollar or British pound. Quiet frankly this is a disappointing article about facts.
The last 15 years, the Zimbabwean gov't has tracked the diaspora monies and each year except the last 4 years it has been about $3.0 billion us dollars a year. The last 3 years was $800 million. It would take a whole lot of faith to believe these so-called new numbers from a South Africa newspaper. Zimbabwe demographic numbers about immigration and diaspora are perhaps the most distorted numbers in Southern Africa. The idea behind was always to distort the numbers to bring Mugabe gov't down. But, that has not happened! The diaspora are a powerful vocal group, who are prepared to confront a white tiny minorities of anglo heritage, who seek to distort information for personal gain. This article gets a D- from me.
