My submission is that there is so much corruption in the university system, and no responsible government can continue to throw funds into a drain pipe. As for the issue of salary increment, please forget it. If any increment is granted by government, other professional or rival unions in the public sector will follow suit and make the country ungovernable.

It seems as if the federal government of Nigeria has failed to understand that she is jeopardising the bright future of her youth especially we that are in the universities by failing to recongnise the important of the demand of ASUU concerning the development of the educational sector of the country. Isn't it a slap on our future by the so called memebers of the senate that diverted the N6.2 billion that's supposed to be invested on education on road construction and the likes. is it the road they want to construct that will make the educational sector more developed? or they have to failed to discharge their responsibilties to the fullest of their knowledge, well it should not be a surprise because most of them did not pass through the normal route of varsity education, they do not have children in nigerian universities but have rather been crazy for the love of what they received on thgeir seat or do not want to know if any body is suffering. Time and Tide wait for no man, if the FGN does not act fast, Nigeria will crawl for long before she stands upright in all ramscification because it is this education that will make us attain the great lofty height as in the national anthem.
@Soyombo Opeyemi: I was surprised by the parochial thinking of this writer about ASUU. He was busy attacking them while praising our corrupt leaders that are looting the country’s treasuries; it seems that he is out of touch and still living in the past. I think it will be nice for you to do your research well before writing such senseless article for the public to read. For your information, no reasonable union will go on strike without formal meeting for discussion between their leaders and those (your) government “officials.” The governments (present and past) had reached many agreements with ASUU and other unions without fulfilling them- even after many discussions; instead, they are busy stealing the money meant for improving the standard of education and for providing social amenities. Now you are making noise here as if ASUU is only asking for pay rise or as if they are the first union to go on strike for salary increase and as if they are the one destroying the value of naira. Even though I agreed that there are bad eggs in our University systems that must be checked, but I was surprised by your choice of words as if the lecturers are doing nothing good, like someone who never go through university to know the situations of infrastructures in our higher institutions, instead you are on the side of the political office holders that are increasing their salaries more often than normal and taking bribes from innocent people.Blacklisting the lecturers based on what few students told you (which I am not disputing), without proper investigation on the general situations in our campuses and the reasons for ASUU strikes; it shows that you lack same good education they are fighting for because you don’t know the detail of what is going on in your system; this is why ASUU is fighting to provide sound education for the next generations to prevent producing half-baked graduates that believes sacking lecturers by visionless government “official” is the solution to problems in our universities. No unions like to go on strike, if the government is doing their part correctly, there will be no strike. In all the countries that I had known in Europe, they focused more attention on their Universities, research institutes with adequate funds and their future plans are based on suggestions from their scientists. How can we reach such level when our leaders are busy sharing the country’s wealth, prostituting around while some lecturers have no good furniture to sit in their overcrowded offices and the students have no social facilities to make life easy for them in their campuses, how can the students get quality education when they have no adequate lecture rooms, their laboratories are empty with no modern equipments and chemicals. Look at the crises and bad situation in Niger Delta and the country as a whole, all these need attention, is it also the fault of ASUU? Still you are talking of day of reckoning for lecturers, as if they are only asking for pay rise.It shows that you did not see beyond your nose, if you know the details on the strike, then you will know what to write. God Bless Nigeria.
its now high time FEDERAL GOVT will announce and declare amnesty for the education militant (ASUU) to call of the strike so as to enbrace dialogue before nemesis catch up with them so that the negotiation will continue.. ASUU is causing problems within the education sector. ASUU must call off the strike so that the negotiation shall continue. we are tired of staying at home which is causing brain drain in education sector. am very serious if AWUZUBUIKWE (asuu president) are president or minister of education he can not perform up to this level... the issue at hand doesnt require only about winning but also about given it second taught with some feasibility study.
student were deing of staying of idle because idleness kill faster than aids.
please i want this small article publish... fatai muideen university of uyo
The problem is that ASUU believe that they are untouchable and irreplaceable, Winning Uni-Ilorin and other issues makes them think no one, no Govt can withstand them. Its time Govt take the interest of majority into considerstion. If it is salary, it should be for all.If welfare, should be for all. ASUU is becoming like grave that takes every day, but gives nothing. The country is sick and tired of their old fashion method of resolving matters. Some of our students are naturally endowed, they can read and make it in life.
