As a Pan-aficanist (Ghanian) who has travelled all over the continent...I have seen many different political regimes and spoken to many different people. I was in Asmara and 2005 and can report that true indeed...the people are suffering. The Goverment controls everything and has taken control over every part of the economy and now wants 100% control of the people. The continual face-off against Ethiopia is just a convenient ruse to press-gang the population into subservience and control every lever of production. The Youth do not want to spend their life at a war-front like their elders. Young Eritreans flee Sarwa and pass into Sudan, Algeria, Kenya, Djibouti. The spirit of Freedom can never be controlled. The Eritrean govt and their secret service personnel cannot control the Internet. Afwerki, you have killed the spirit and joy achieved through independence.
