Soon after General William E. (Kip) Ward became the first commander of the United States Africa Command, known as Africom, in October 2007, he summed up his vision for his new undertaking in a posting on the Africom web site: "Years from now we want Africans and Americans to be able to say Africom made a difference — a positive difference."

In Mbembe's book "postcolony Africa" he said that most African states have failed. He thinks that the continent will faced wars over natural resources by rivial groups in Africa. The African countries are so weak that Africa will need outside help to protect it from itself. A good example of this is Charles taylor in West Africa with his children soldies.
All "rival groups" are mere proxies of INVADERDOM interests.
Accordingly, it is the same old, crappish story: Africans are work horses of INVADERDOM.
And, the disaster of "African Scholarship", and a disaster it is, is that it is unhinged scholarship. A scholar is someone who understands the tradition founding and tradition sustaining texts of his or her tradition. The function of scholarship is to defend the tradition against irrational attacks, at least as perceived by the scholars. Hence, scholars are inherently conservative: they endeavor to conserve the unity of their literary traditions.
What literary traditions do 'African' scholars "endeavor to conserve'?
Since there is no African literary tradition, the answer is obvious: the literary traditions of INVADERDOM.

This is not NKRUMAH'S Africa or your grandpa's Africa. There have now emerged multi-polar competing hegemons in Africa: INVADERBRITAIN/YANKEEDOM, CHINA, RUSSIA, not to mention the emerging power from the South, Brazil (India is a tail of the first entry of the powerful and infamous).
Hence, the wars, misnamed "civil wars," that are rocking in many resource rich zones of Africa. If you believe that these wars are wars of principles or principled wars, then you are a child. They are resource wars, period.

False: they will be poor if and only if they fail to process their resources in their own zones. I think the jargon is "value added," which obscures the reality that the "value" includes jobs, industrial processes, and a robust economy that can grow a vibrant bourgeosie (traders) which, in turn, would create the conditions for the creation of a professional "middle class."
But, INVADERDOM won't let that happen, because of the so-called law of scarcity and the clap trap of marginal efficiency hogtied to the mess called the theory of international trade or, even more boneheadedly, the stammer of "the best end-user," all amounting to one and only one word: GREED.
There are many African countries that can be classified as a failed state. The civil services doesn't exist, the total break down of the rules of law, the people are in flight and parallel governments. A good example of parallel governments in Africa are Kenya,Zim. DRC, Suydan, and some countries in west Africa. In most cases the failure of these governments were caused by poor African leadership and not by outside governments. Most governments in the world exist to look out for the interest of the people of their countries. In Africa the policies of most government are to keep the dictators and the ruling elite in power and hell with the poor masses. This is began to happen in SA where the ruling elite of the ANC has taken over and the services in many places are in a state of collapse. The good thing about SA is that they have a large private sector to compete with the government. In most African countries, the private sectors are small or don't exist.
Analysis that borders on ignorance: if you think that "African Governments" are autonomous, then you have no knowledge of your world, which directly implies that you lack self-knowledge.
The days of platitudes are numbered: we now know who calls the shots in Africa, and, dude, it ain't no Africans.

Sir, Your comments are interesting and funny to me. You are however partially correct at best. I am an African by birth and an American by law, so, I have a vested interest in this case. It is true that Americans had interfered in some foreign countries and helped to overthrow and kill some Presidents who were popular and liberal. As a matter of fact, some of the public figures that suffered from American interference had policies that cared much about the poor and needy. They were similar to most Democrats in America. Rather, they were called Socialists or Communists and were assassinated. The dastardly behaviors of assassinating foreign dignitaries by some of the security agencies have since been outlawed. However, the unpopular attack on Iraq by Ex-President George.W.Bush is still fresh on the minds of people all over the world. Also, "One Mans’ Terrorist, is another mans' Hero". A majority of the governments in Africa are insensitive to the demands of the people and deserve some people to fight them continuously else, people will die in utter need. I am from the Niger Delta area of Nigeria. My tribes- men brought world attention, including CNN to see the deplorable condition of life in my area, despite the fact that for almost sixty years, we have produced every penny that has sustained Nigeria. Some of the fatter tribes of Nigeria keep to power through the ballot box or through their sons in the Army. Some majority tribe Generals, especially those from parts of the North specialized in overthrowing or handing power over to each other so as to become dictators and fleece the country dry. The only exception is Rtd General Y.Gowon who came to power because, circumstances necessitated it and not because he wanted to become another “ Barawo” meaning thief in uniform. Some of these useless Nigerians, namely, Babangida are still alive and are opening their dirty mouths daily to participate in politics. Infact, Babangida, the proven thief is attempting to become a President of Nigeria again. Another retired general who became President through the barrel of a gun has just declared that he will commit suicide if he does not win the presidency next time around. This man was never a thief when he was in charge of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company(NNPC) but is suspected of owning million dollar homes and immense wealth after becoming the President for some years. One of them died as President after taking high does of “Sex Enhancers” for example, the almighty Viagra. Foreign banks have not completed tallying the billions he stole from Nigeria before passing away. So, you see that if Africom helps some of these rogue Presidents against people who are fighting for the “Crumbs from the National Table”, it will be doing exactly what America hates from time to time. Americans are free to pursue their dreams in their own country, so do others. With dictators all over Africa, American forces may be used to silence the voices of the needy. I know for certain that Africom will never help to overthrow a bad African Leader. I bet my academic laurels on this. In conclusion, Africom is good normatively, but pragmatically suspect. The Government of Nigeria may not have agreed to come to terms with the fighters from my tribe if forces like Africom were in Nigeria presently, because, the so called terrorists, may have been defeated.

International policies between two countries are not decided by right or wrong but, by power. The US doesn't make policies because they are morally right but, how this policy will help the US. The US is the first great power in history that has not really used all of it's power. The Romans ruled western Europe for three thousandth years by being brutal to their enemies. If the US wants to go into Angola and take over this country tomorrow there is nothing out there to stop them. If the US wants to take over Cuba tomorrow there nothing out there to stop them. The mistake many African countries made was to set up all of these state own companies and this became a ticket for corruption by the dictators of Africa. In the US the government officials can't steal money from US steel because it's not own by the government. In Nigeria, the state owned the electric co. and billions have been spent to generate electricity but, there are blackout all over the country. If this company was a private company there would be very few blackouts because there would be no profit. The same story is being told all over Africa with the state own companies. Fellow Writers/Readers, After reading your articles, I have come to an irrevocable conclusion that you are all one- sided in your approach to this issue. Some of your comments portray you as persons who may be biased against America. My exposure to unusualy dangerous and scary situations in life, have stopped me from reacting angrily to what people may utter to me. America, has the right to go to any part of the world,legally to compete against other countries in trade and commerce. I agree that "All Roofs Are Not Equal" and should be treated as individual roofs. Africa is a particularly rough part of the World and may need one form of military aid or the other to subdue the inherent lack of stability in our countries. The smaller African Countries for example may need a "Big Brother" to protect them. It is not too difficult to over-run a small country over-night. I know some countries that sorround Nigeria that donot measure up to Ajegunle(a sub-set of Lagos)in anwway whatsoever. Such countries need a fairly neutral power around. Without delving any more into this Africom issue, the only thing I am afraid of is that Africom may not help us to overthrow the array of bad leaders that we have in Africa. Rather, it may be used to quell things like University faculty riots, and Riverine unrests that abound here and there in the creeks of Nigeria for example.

Nigeria.Yet some notorious gamblers who have constituted hawks and bent of hi-jacking our God given resources to the benefits of their immediate clandestine families, are our leaders! my point of concern is that America's presence on our soil will do us no favour, because they would be concentrated on the oil business and have no time for the developmental agenda else something needs to be done! i strongly believe that there would be a systemic change in Nigeria, may be, it may make need of war!?! why is it that my state is under US scrutiny? we are all sovereign states but our leaders do not even know that the country they man is a sovereign one! It is particularluy agonising going through the hard fact that about 60% of Nigerians serving at the National assembly cannot even recite our national Anthem and Pledge? what are we still waiting for?
