Makerere University students of Industrial Fine Art organised an art exhibition at the Margaret Trowell School of Fine Art Gallery to reflect on independence. The exhibition, which started on October 9 and has been open to the general public, ends today (Thursday).

How very, very sad. We had such high hopes when M7 took power and began to promote democracy. I think he meant well and I believe he would have done better if he had not filled his government with his former military allies. Perhaps he had no choice. They still had and have the guns. Military minds are authoritarian minds. They do not trust democracy. Hopefully, as more and more Ugandans become educated they will be able to break the grip the military has on their government. Knowing there is a problem is the first step towards solving it. The Makerere art students are contributing to that knowledge. I hope many, many Ugandans will view their exhibit. Hopefully it will be taken around the country to be exhibited in many towns, villages and schools.
Informed voting is the solution as long as polling places are protected and monitored by the voters. Wars only replace one set of warriors for another.
