Concerns abound about a nine billion dollar Chinese investment in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, especially around environmental consequences and transparency. And, on the Chinese side, investors complain not only about the lack of security in the DRC but about their own government not providing enough support.

thanx Koroo this is Good for DRC to have taken such a wonderful decision to help its citzens but DRC has the autonomus rights to put mechanisms to protect its poeple from further expliotation. let them study the intension of China into this investment as they strick a balance. i personnally dont like to see DRC tommorrow crying and blaming China to have plundered their valuable resources yet they had an upper hand in negotiating into this deal.
As the article pointed out these are really much needed developments. It is a shame that the Belgians left this country this way. How can a country the size of western europe only have 125 miles of tarred road.
We are grateful to the Chinese for trying to batter trade with us in this massive way.
Nonetheless, we all know that the only winner will be the Chinese, because they can tar the whole country as much as they want but if they don't help to build the institutions and human capacity to maintain these infrastructure, it will all come crumbling down in a few decades if not years. We have seen these happen in so many African countries. Yet the Chinese would have plundered all of the country's copper, diamonds etc and shipped them away to China. That is why the Chinese will be the eventual winner.
So, I ask the leaders of DRC to be really careful with this and learn from the Brazilian example where they prefer their oil resources to be in the ground till they have the institutions to manage it rather than rush and have others take advantage of it.
Furthermore, this is the more reason why we need an integrated Africa, speaking with one load voice, where together we can build our own roads with the value we get from selling our own resources to outsiders. No one country can do it alone, and other countries will always continue to take advantage of our disunity.
Wake up Africa!
Wake up DRC!
Wake up my people!
