The AllAfrica Foundation is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization founded to focus public attention in North America and Europe, across Africa and around the world on critical issues for African development; to support the growth of independent African media; to provide skills and training for African journalists; and to deliver technology systems and services.

Established by the multi-media and technology company AllAfrica Global Media, the Foundation employs pioneering information technology to create a digital commons for African issues. AllAfrica Global Media launched the foundation and has made a substantial commitment to its work - and forges public and private partnerships to extend its reach and impact.

The AllAfrica Foundation operates SustainableAfrica.org and PeaceAfrica.net, digital commons for African development and peace networks. The channels connect groups with shared concerns and activities both within and across the thematic boundaries. Hosted by the AllAfrica platform and utilizing its efficient technology, the channels not only provide a unique Internet resource but also leverage allAfrica.com's traffic and visibility to direct attention to a multitude of initiatives, including web sites that provide useful tools and content but attract few visitors.A complementary broadcast project to webcast and distribute related audio and video productions extends the perimeters of the project, taking the issues to wider audiences in Africa and elsewhere.

The major AllAfrica Foundation initiative for 2005-2006 is HealthAfrica.org, an information and technology tool to combat Africa's health emergency, centering on HIV/Aids and the related malaria and tuberculosis epidemics. HealthAfrica will serve the worldwide community of people and institutions engaged in addressing African health issues, as well as alert policymakers, opinion leaders and a larger public to the continuing crisis that claims over 200,000 lives month after month, eroding social structures and leaving an estimated 25 million orphans by the end of the decade. The site promises to become the primary information resource on African health issues, while the project's pioneering technology component will facilitate the delivery of prevention, care and treatment.

The foundation-administered Charlayne Hunter-Gault Africa Journalism Fellowship honors the pioneering work of veteran journalist Charlayne Hunter-Gault by benefiting African women who are media professionals or scholars. Fellows visit the United States or Europe for periods ranging from three to six months, with customized programs that offer opportunities for research and reflection, consultations with media enterprises, and peer interactions.

Charlayne Hunter-Gault, whose prize-laden career has taken her to the New Yorker magazine, the New York Times, the "MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour", National Public Radio, and CNN, has become a beloved mentor to a generation of aspiring journalists. Her connection with this fellowship continues that legacy.

The Foundation operates from AllAfrica Global Media offices in Lagos, Johannesburg and Washington, D.C. AllAfrica is committed to insuring a strong voice for Africa in the international marketplace of ideas and information. It is the leading source of news and information about Africa, distributing over 1000 news articles and documents daily through outlets that reach tens of millions of end users globally, in partnership with over 100 African news organizations who earn revenue from the venture. Over 14,000 web sites display material from or link to allAfrica.com, one of the Internet's largest content sites and a nominee for two consecutive years as 'Best News Site' by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences.

A major focus of the foundation is HealthAfrica, a multi-media information and technology initiative to produce news, aggregate information and data, provide innovative technology applications and give visibility and linkages to address Africa's health crisis.
