According to the Secretary General's report, the security situation in
Darfur has deteriorated as a result of an attack by the rebel group, the
Justice & Equality Movement (JEM) on Omdurman, a city across the Nile from
the capital of Khartoum on 10 May 2008. The Sudan government accused Chad
of supporting the JEM attack and has cut off diplomatic ties with Chad.Attacks against UNAMID and humanitarian personnel as well as fighting
between rebel groups and the government are other contributory factors to the deterioration in the security situation. The JEM attack has also
hindered the deployment efforts of UNAMID and led to increased displacement of people in the affected areas. |
