Nkosi Johnson Remembered

Twelve year old Nkosi Johnson, who became the symbol of the battle against HIV/AIDS in South Africa, was given a hero's burial in Johannesburg on Saturday June 9, 2001 in a funeral attended by thousands of mourners, including the former Zambian president, Kenneth Kaunda.

Ethiopia, March 2000

Photographer Rodney Rascona was asked to go to Ethiopia in March 2000 by Food for the Hungry, a non-profit NGO that had been involved in relief and development projects throughout the country for over 15 years. His role was to produce images to communicate the condition of the children and people in the areas affected by the drought emergency.

Guinea Refugee Crisis

AllAfrica's Ofeibea Quist Arcton travelled to southern Guinea early in late January to report on the plight of hundreds of thousands of civilians caught in the crossfire near the borders of Sierra Leone and Liberia. Two weeks later, the newly-appointed United Nations' High Commissioner for Refugees, Ruud Lubbers, described the situation as "the worst refugee crisis in the world".
