Fespaco at night
Fespaco Headquarters in Ouagadougou, by night.

Every two years, the dusty and hospitable Burkinabe capital, Ouagadougou opens its arms and welcomes film directors, producers and other professionals, as well as enthusiastic film-goers, to Fespaco, the festival of pan-African film and television. The city becomes a focal point, continental hub, giant screen and backdrop for everyone and anyone interested in African cinema. On the evening of the 24th of February a stunning performance by the Senegalese musical superstar, Youssou N'Dour, opened the festival, in the thirty-thousand seater 4th August stadium, which was packed to capacity. N'Dour came on stage after an elaborate dance, sound and light and firework extravaganza by local Burkinabe artists, portraying the theme of this year's pan-African film festival, Cinema and New Technologies. Ofeibea Quist Arcton is reporting from Ouagadougou for allAfrica.com and hosting a daily live radio show on the BBC World Service.
