The Niger Delta is a vast wetland. Since the launch of commercial oil production in 1958, Shell, Chevron, Exxon-Mobil and other multinational oil companies have pumped an estimated $350bn from the Delta. Local communities say they have gained nothing in return, except pollution, repression and poverty.
