"A group of women sit together in a shack in the Philippi township near Cape Town. I met them the day before at the Centre for Victims of Violence and Torture, where I explained what the People on War project is all about and what the aim of our visit there was. Afterwards eight women said they wanted to tell their story. They spoke of the violence and the torture they endured during the Apartheid era. Rape, abuse, death of family members, detention - all of that was well covered. The women feel somewhat bitter but they are determined to get on with their lives. They told me their stories because they want people to learn from them. In my eyes they represent an element of strength in the culture of South Africa, but they are also the faces of abuse."
