Attacks On US Hurt Africa

Like the rest of the world, Africa was facing an uncertain economic outlook even before the attacks. Before September 11, the World Bank expected developing country growth to fall from 5,5% percent last year in 2000 to 2,9% percent this year in 2001 as a result of slowdowns in the US, Japan and Europe, and then rebound to 4,3% percent in 2002.

Thousands Demonstrate Against US Bombings

On October 12, 5 000 Capetonians protested against the US-led bombings of Afghanistan to the American consulate, bearing posters like "Stop the Oppression", "Stop the War" and "No Difference Hitler and Bush". The march was called by the Muslim Judicial Council, the Congress of South African Trade Unions and the Western Cape Council of Churches.
