Morocco: French Truck Drivers' Strike Affects Morocco

4 November 1997

TUNIS, Tunisia (PANA) — Morocco has been losing the equivalent of 18 million dirhams worth of exports daily (1.8 million U.S. dollars) since a strike by French truck drivers took effect Saturday.

Reporting this Tuesday, the Morocco News Agency, MAP, said the losses was in lost agricultural exports to northern European countries.

As a result, exporters have had to cancel orders. The situation has also depressed prices on the local market.

Other exporters have had little choice but to land their products at Belgian or German ports at high cost.

Local exporters' associations have asked the government in Rabat to negotiate the protection of their exports with French officials.
