Nigeria: Enahoro Allays Fears On Threat To SNC To Political Office Holders

  • Comment

Lagos — NADECO chairman, Chief Anthony Enahoro has allayed fears being entertained by some political office holders that the convocation of a Sovereign National Conference would terminate their term of office, affirming that any recommendation arising from such a conference is applicable only at the expiration of their terms of office.

Describing the fears, which he said was being propounded by a few critics as being "designed to lure incumbent executives and legislators into, believing that such a conference would curtail your term of office", he disclosed that for the benefit of those who may be reeling under such misapprehension that the sovereignty of the proposed conference applies to the changes which the conference may propose and which should take effect from the expiration of the term of office of incumbents'.

Enahoro made this known in Akure yesterday during a special session organised in his honour by the Ondo State House of Assembly to commemorate his visit to the state.

"The demand is for the sovereignty of the national conference to be subject only to a National Referendum and the decisions of the conference should take effect at the end of the term of office of the incumbent", he stressed.

Enahoro, who agreed that the emergence of the present democratic structures was made possible by "a partially democratic process," said the present democratic situation in the country, "calls for some rethinking," stressing that "that is why pro-democracy activists "have prescribed some redefinition regarding the breadth and scope of the sovereignty of the National Conference".

Enahoro, who also lent support for those calling for the emporwerment of ethnic nationalities in the country urged members of legislatures of the Yoruba-speaking South Western Nigeria to organise periodic sittings to discuss issues affecting Nigeria.

The special session was witnessed by the State Governor Adebayo Adefarati, his Deputy, members of the State Executive Council and party leaders.

After the session, the elder statesman left for Owo to pay homage to the widow of the late Patriarch of the NADECO movement, Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin.
