Lagos, Nigeria — With about three weeks to the start of the Sydney Olympics, Nigeria has named a final list of 22 players for the defence of the Olympic soccer title it won four years ago at the Atlanta Games in the U.S.
The list, compiled by team coach Jo Bonfere and released by the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) in Abuja Wednesday, comprised Arsenal star Nwankwo Kanu, who led the team that won the Atlanta soccer gold in 1996.
Garba Lawal and Godwin Okpara join Kanu as the three players to fill the over-aged slots allowed each of the participating teams, while Celestine Babayaro is making a return to the games.
The association also released the list of the Nigerian female team to the Sydney Games.
The Nigerian male team, known as Dream Team II, is currently training in Holland while the female team, The Super Falcons, is preparing for the games in Germany.
The male team is one of the four teams representing Africa at the games, scheduled to start 15 September, while the female team is Africa's sole representative.
