Washington, D.C. — He was world steeplechase champion in 1991, 1993 and 1995, and winner of the silver medal at the 1996 Olympics. He twice cracked the 8-minute barrier in the 3000 meter steeplechase, the first to do so. Although he tore his achilles tendon after the 1999 Goodwill Games, the 29-year-old Kenyan can't be counted out of the running in Sydney.
