Cote d'Ivoire: Attack Reported On Guei Stronghold

25 October 2000

Abidjan — Early morning reports in Cote d'Ivoire said an armoured battalion had attacked the Akuedo military camp outside Abidjan where the 'Red Brigade' loyal to General Robert Guei is stationed.

Akuedo camp is where the mutiny which led to Guei's coup d'etat on December 24 last year began.

Unconfirmed reports said members of the same armoured battalion were heading for the national television complex in the suburb of Cocody in Abidjan.

The Ivorian army has been seriously divided since soon after the coup d'etat. The Red Brigade of Akuedo are considered responsible for forcing the Electoral Commission on Monday to stop broadcasting election results and engineering conditions for the subsequent announcement of Guei's victory.
