Harare — The issue of patriotism and what it represents is very
topical, especially in African nations where true democracy does not
exist beyond what is in the national constitution.
Ugly confrontations and mud slinging have been common between African
governments and institutions, such as private media organisations,
affirmative action pressure groups and human rights organisations,
which carry opinions and beliefs that differ from those of the ruling
government.
