Lusaka — The Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) has condemned suggestions and manoeuvres among some ruling MMD cadres to have the Republican Constitution amended in order for President Frederick Chiluba to run for another term. EFZ executive director Reverend Thomas Lumba advised in an interview yesterday that the Constitution should not be tampered with.
"Zambians should wake up to the realities of the dangers of doing such a thing," said Rev. Lumba.
"We will be a laughing stock in the region, in Africa and the whole world if we did that." He said people should be mature adding that the church is concerned because they are part of the movement that brought about change in 1991. He complained that a lot of issues in the country still remain unresolved and it was clear that there was lack of commitment from the Zambian government.
He cited the issue of the striking junior doctors which he said has not been resolved by the government despite the church intervening. "The year has closed with no solution in sight, the level of poverty is on the increase," noted Rev. Lumba.
