RWANDA: Army chief in talks with MONUC

Rwandan army chief of staff Major General Kayumba Nyamwasa has said there is no tension between his country and the UN Mission in DRC (MONUC), but he accused the UN of appearing uncommitted to the Lusaka peace agreement. Speaking after meeting the MONUC force commander General Mountaga Diallo in Kigali, Nyamwasa said MONUC should have condemned the violators of the ceasefire agreement. "It is ironic...that we are expected to explain the misdeeds of the other party," he said, according to Rwandan radio. Therefore, he added, this was one of the topics discussed with Diallo on Thursday. "We must look at these issues objectively and...determine who is doing what and who is not doing what," he stated. However, he stressed there "is no tension between MONUC and Rwanda". "If anything our working relationship is quite cordial, but that does not mean we do not point out what we think is not being done properly," he said. He added that he had no idea why the UN Security Council had criticised Rwanda's actions in DRC's Katanga province, where renewed fighting has broken out.
