Maseru — Despite what is seemingly the growing sport rivalry between Zimbabwe and Lesotho, the Zimbabwe Cricket Association has shown to have no grudge to the tiny kingdom when they proposed for Lesotho Cricket Association affiliation to the world cricket governing body, International Cricket Confederation (ICC) recently.
Seconded by the East and Central African Cricket Conference, Zimbabwe has proposed that Lesotho together with Botswana and St Helena be recognised by the international body, a step which will apparently see the latter to international cricket games.
But inspite of all these, Lesotho Cricket Association President, Terry Fraenkel has no dream of a Test Match yet. "We have to develop cricket in this country first, then we will think of a test match in years to come," he said.
Fraenkel added: "All our finances would be used for development programme and you know, it takes good financial strength to play a Test Match. You can't just go there and pay. This will be a morale boost for cricket players as the Zimbabweans have shown their might in the cricket world."
Zimbabweans were on a rampaging form when they outclassed once feared West Indies and England at the Old Trafford in United Kingdom last year.
He disclosed that the Lesotho Under-15 team has been invited to take part in a five-country tournament to take place in Lusaka, Zambia from March 22 to 30. He said the participating countries include Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Malawi and the hosts Zambia.
"We are starting to assemble a team that will represent Lesotho. The standard of cricket is surprisingly high in the country. But the schools' vacation prevented us to keep the players through their paces. And it will be the first time these youngsters are involved in a tournament of this nature so obviously you can not expect too much from them," explained Fraenkel.
The tournament is organised by the ICC.
The bulky president has had his fare share of problems during the vacation when his muscles on the right hand shrinked causing the dislocation of his elbow. He is recovering outside hospital after he was treated at an undisclosed hospital in Bloemfontein in South Africa.
