Nigeria: Kano: Lingering Question Over Sharia

Lagos — Prior to the introduction of the Sharia law in Kano State, there was palpable apprehension in many quarters that the advent of full implementation of the Islamic legal system in the state would certainly trigger off bloody clashes reminiscent of the sad episode that heralded its debate in Kaduna State.

This fear derived from certain factors. One of these is the fact that though a predominantly Muslim State, Kano shares with Lagos the attribute of being the busiest commercial city in Nigeria and the West African sub-region. What this means is that Kano has a mixed population of ardent Muslims and Christian traders of Southern Nigeria extraction.
