Cape Town — Members of the Africa Christian Action (ACA) group and the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) marched to Parliament yesterday to protest at South Africa's abortion laws.
The procession through Cape Town from the Grand Parade to the main gates of Parliament symbolised a funeral for the babies legally aborted in South Africa since 1997.
ACA says the official figure of abortions performed since 1997 was more than 142812.
The procession included the display of 3m-by-6m billboards of live babies in the womb, while members of the public carried flowers, wreathes and small white crosses.
According to a member of the ACA, the large billboards, mounted on a trailer, would be towed around Cape Town to alert residents to the reality of abortions.
The ACA handed letters from the public to ACDP MP Cheryllyn Dudley, who serves on the parliamentary health committee.
The letters were written by children asking government to respect the sanctity of life and to stop legalised abortion in SA.
The ACDP urged those in the fight against abortion not to be discouraged.
"This will be a long walk, but we will be victorious," said Dudley.
"There is a major turnaround in the US. Similarly in SA, we believe that the time will come when Christians will stand together and vote godly men and women into positions of authority."
