Nigeria: State Declares Holiday For Visiting Archbishop

Lagos — Nigeria's south-eastern State of Anambra has declared Tuesday 6 February as a public holiday in honour of visiting Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey.

Work hours in the State have also been cut by half on Monday, when Carey is scheduled to arrive in the State on a two- day visit.

The Anglican Primate of England has been touring some of Nigeria's predominantly-Muslim States since his arrival Wednesday on a two-week visit.

A government statement in Awka, Anambra capital, said Governor Chinwoke Mbadinuju has called on the people to turn out en masse to receive the leader of the Anglican Church.

Meanwhile, Nigerian Police said they have stepped up efforts to recover Carey's missing luggage.

A member of Carey's entourage said the luggage, suspected to have been stolen either at the Lagos or Abuja airports, contained a laptop computer, digital video, cameras and other materials meant for the coverage of the visit.
