Uganda: Illegal Churches To Be Demolished

Kampala — The Town Clerk, Gordon Mwesigye has said all illegal churches operating without the permission of Kampala City Council (KCC) will be demolished.

Speaking to council executive members at KCC chambers recently, Mwesigye said many people had approached him complaining of the noise made by night worshippers in several residential areas.

He said KCC will not allow people to get inconvenienced by a minority group.

Mwesigye said some people had abandoned their homes because of the noise. He said most churches were near peoples' residences.

Mwesigye said KCC would come up with a policy that would regulate all savedee (Balokole) churches. He said the registered churches would operate on KCC stipulated laws.

Mwesigye said no church would be allowed to operate beyond the set time. "We are not going to allow these people inconvenience others by giving them sleepless nights because of the noise. Laws are yet to be set and followed by these churches and anybody who violates the set laws will face prosecution," Mwesigye said.

The RDC Cranimer Kalinda warned against night worshipping saying it caused insecurity in the city. He said such gatherings were a target for chaos and terrorists.

Video showrooms (bibanda) were also restricted from operating beyond late hours and those to operate were requested to provide sound proof rooms because other people needed peace.
