African Football Round Up

London — A summary of latest African football reports.

Ivory Coast Ask FIFA To Postpone Congo Match

Ivory Coast has asked football's soccer body, FIFA to postpone the World Cup qualifier against Congo.

The match is due to be played on April 8 in Abidjan, but Ivory Coast want the game put back to May 20 to give the national team more time to prepare for a vital match against Tunisia on April 22.

FIFA proposed the match against Congo be played in early April after the Central African country agreed to resume its World Cup qualifying campaign earlier this month.

Congo had pulled out of the competition after defeats in their first two qualifying group matches, citing financial problems.

Tunisia lead group D with 10 points, followed by Ivory Coast with seven points. Congo are bottom of the group.

Madjer Wants To Wait To Take Job

Newly appointed Algerian coach, Rabah Madjer has said he will delay to take up the post before their World Cup qualifier against Senegal on April 22.

Madjer, who was appointed earlier this month told the Algerian press that the delay is due to his concerns about the squabbling between officials in the Algerian Football Federation.

Madjer, a former African footballer of the year has been working in Qatar. This will be his second stint as coach to the national side.

Algeria have to win in Dakar to keep alive their already slim chances of qualifying for Japan and South Korea next year.

Shock For African Clubs

It has been decided by the Confederation of African Football, that only the winners of the 2002 African Champions League and Cup Winners' Cup will represent the continent at the 2003 Club World Championships in two years time.

The news has come as a disappointment to the club's participating in this year's Champions League. It was expected that the 2001 and 2002 Champions League winners would qualify for the event.

At this year's Club World Cup in Spain, Africa has two representatives - last year's Champions League winners, Hearts of Oak of Ghana and Egyptian side, Zamalek, who won the African Cup Winners' Cup last December.
