Malawi Football Officials to Answer for Missing Kwachas

Blantyre — A probe set up by the Malawian government into misappropriated funds in the football association has revealed that soccer officials are to account for some missing figures.

Sports minister Moses Dossi last October appointed experts to investigate the finances of the Football Association of Malawi. In a preliminary report, the probe committee stated that US$6,000 donated by the country's president, Bakili Muluzi to purchase kits for the national team, the Flames, last year has not been accounted for.

Former FAM vice-president, Sunduzwayo Madise, has denied any involvement in the case of the team kits, and said he has been wrongly accused of using the money otherwise.

It has also been discovered that some officials in FAM withdrew money from the association's bank accounts of up to US$1,250. And hotels were booked for holding meetings, where a lot of money was spent on beer, while Loans issued to some members by FAM are still outstanding.

Dossi said the government will meet with all the concerned parties on April 5 to listen to their defence against the fraud reports. The Malawian government withdrew its funding to FAM last October following reports of embezzlement.
