Africa: Ghana's Young Soccer Stars Battle Against Determined Angola

Addis Ababa — Ghana and Angola will clash again for the second time on Sunday at the Under-20 African Nations Cup finals in Addis Ababa, but this time around, it is for the ultimate prize - gold medal, the right to be called African champions by winning the Ydnekatchew Tessema trophy.

When the two teams last met in a group B match, the titleholders, Ghana beat Angola 1-0. A goal by Greece-based striker Derrick Boateng separated the two sides. But Angola have made impressive progress in the tournament and are, without doubt, a surprise package for the final.

Ghana have won the title twice previously and the Angolans hope to deny them a possible hat-trick in Ethiopia. It is the first time, however, that Angola have risen this far in an African continental final. By reaching the semi-finals, the Palancas Negras Junior have also qualified to play in the Under-20 World Cup in Argentina later this year.

Angola have the top scorer in the tournament, Pedro Manuel, nicknamed Mantorras. The Portugal-based striker has scored four goals. Goalkeeper, Joao Mamona is also one of the best in the competition and Ghanaian strikers know he is hard to beat. Coach Oliveira Goncalves will also rely on his midfield marshalls, Felisberto Graca Amaral and Viana Mendonca to push the ball up front for Mantorras.

Ghana will start with the same team that beat Nigeria 4-1 in the group match and Egypt on penalties in the semi-finals. The Black Satellites have the best defence in the tournament with only three goals conceded. But coach Emmanuel Afranie says he will take every precaution to proof his boys against complacency.

The majority of the home fans will be supporting the Ghanaians, who are clearly the favourites. But Angola have adjusted quite well to the conditions in Addis Ababa and, having defeated Ethiopia 5-2 in the semi-finals, the Palancas Negras are clearly no pushovers.
