African Football Round Up

London — A summary of the latest African football reports.

Botswana Coach Resigns

David Bright has resigned as coach of the Botswana national team, following the country's COSAFA Castle Cup exit earlier this month.

Bright, also in charge of club champions Mogoditshane Fighters, said Botswana should hire a full-time coach in order to end a run of disappointing results.

Botswana soccer officials said they may look to neighbouring South Africa for a replacement. Botswana lost 1-0 at home against Malawi on March 18, the fifth successive year they have failed to reach the later stages of the southern African championship.

Champions League Matches Postponed

Due to the final of the Under-20 African Nations Cup finals in Ethiopia, two Champions League matches have been postponed by the Confederation of African Football.

Champions League titleholders, Hearts of Oak will open the defence of the trophy they won last year next weekend against Etoile du Congo because of three key players with the Under-20 national team in Ethiopia.

The Ghanaian side were due to play the first round first-leg encounter against the Congolese on Sunday in Kumasi.

The youth championship has also caused the postponement of the Champions League tie between St George of Ethiopia and Tusker FC of Kenya. The first round, first leg match will now be played in Addis Ababa next weekend.

Osei Kuffour To Miss Hearts Opener

Hearts of Oak skipper, Emmanuel Osei Kuffour could be missing from his side's Champions League opener next weekend for trials with Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukraine. After the trials, Kuffour will probably not make it back in time for the first round, first leg match against Etoile du Congo in Kumasi next Sunday.

Osei Kuffour scored 10 goals in the Champions League last year to finish as top scorer, after switching from his customary midfielder role to central striker.

The prospect of a possible move to Europe has seen the Ghanaian international put trials in the Ukraine above next week's Champions league clash. Osei Kuffour has said he would stay with Hearts for the Club World championship in Spain later this year, even if the Ukrainian team are interested to sign him.
