Rwanda: Defense Attorney Challenges Tribunal's Jurisdiction

Arusha — Ramsey Clark, former US attorney general and lawyer for genocide suspect Elizaphan Ntakirutimana today challenged the UN Security Council's legal authority to establish the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).

Clark was addressing Trial Chamber I of the ICTR on several motions including the dismissal of charges against his client on grounds that the tribunal has no jurisdiction to hear the case.
