Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire — The secretary general of the Panafrican Union of Post Offices (UPAP), Jiliani Ben Haddada, is on a working visit to Cote d'Ivoire ahead of the 23rd congress of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in Abidjan.

Haddada, who ends his visit Friday, has had a working session with members of the general commission in charge of the organising the next UPU congress in Abidjan in 2004.

"This will be the second time in the 125 years of the UPU that a congress of this type is being held in Africa," a statement of the Ivorian ministry of economic infrastructures said.

"UPAP is very supportive of the proceedings and the organisation of the congress," Haddada said.

The UPU congress is held every five years to review postal activities in the world.

UPU is a UN agency while UPAP is a branch of the Organisation of African Unity.
